Remote Learning System
Dear Parents and Carers
I am writing again further to my letter dated 18th December to inform you that ALL Royal Harbour students will be able to access remote learning from the week commencing 4th January. The DfE has requested that schools should offer remote learning to all year groups that it can. Fortunately we are in a great position to still be able to invite all students to join lessons live via Google Classroom and Google Meet, whilst also preparing the school for the mass testing process which will begin w/c 11th January.
Lessons will be uploaded onto Google Classroom by all class teachers and Google Meet will be used to deliver lessons live. Should your son/daughter not have access to IT provision to do this, please ensure that the school is made aware as a priority today. We have received additional IT support and will try our best to get laptops to students who cannot work otherwise.
The lower site will be running live lessons online from 10am to 12.15 every day for all subjects studied. Please see the schedule below as to when we will expect students to log in and participate in lessons:
English and humanities 10:00 to 11:00.
Maths, Science and Geography 11:15 to 12:15.
Maths, Science and Geography 10:00 to 11:00.
English and humanities 11:15 to 12:15.
Additional classwork will also be set on Google Classroom for students to complete independently. This is in addition to the live lessons, we ask that the live lessons are considered as a minimum for our lower school students.
Students in Years 9,10 and 11 will follow their normal timetables. All teaching staff will provide a minimum of 15-20 minutes of live instruction during their normal timetabled lesson, in which teachers have been asked to explain the classwork being set, take questions from students and talk through where to find resources in google classroom or assist with submission.
If you require a copy of a students timetable to assist them in attending the live lessons please contact the school and we can send this out electronically to you. Please ensure that reception have the correct e-mail address and telephone contact details for you so that all correspondence reaches you as soon as it is sent out.
As it stands the GCSE exams are still going ahead and so it is paramount that year 11 and 13 students are attending online for the normal school day. Many teachers in their subjects will be live for the full lesson time and we will be asking staff to call home if students do not log in and join lessons with them. With only 2 terms until the exam term begins, lost learning at this stage of GCSEs is all exam content and/or revision. We will prioritise getting IT provision to Y11 students who need it to minimise disruption to learning.
We know that students joining us ‘live’ is absolutely the best substitute to being in school and in the classroom in person, however, we will also ensure paper packs of work are available for students where required. If a student does require a paper pack of work then we will need to know in advance to organise printing. Work packs will have to be collected and signed for at the reception on the Lower Site for Years 7 and 8 or the Upper Site for Years 9 and 10.
The document entitled ‘How to Access Remote Learning and Live Lessons’ was sent home before Christmas but can also be found here: https://www.rha.kent.sch.uk/remote-learning/
It contains guidance about how students should log in; IT staff will also be around on both sites should you require any further support in assisting our students to work remotely from home.
If you have any enquiries regarding the remote learning or work set for students please contact firstname.lastname@example.org we can then ensure your enquiries are passed on to the correct member of staff and dealt with as promptly as possible. Year 12 and 13 students have been briefed by our 6th form Leads Mr Donohoe and Miss Spenner.
Students with public exams this week are invited to attend their timetabled lessons in school in these subjects, these will also be delivered remotely to ensure that we give all of these students the best possible chance of success.
We look forward to welcoming back year 11 and 13 next week on 11th January and the rest of our students on Monday 18th January.
Mrs S Warncken
