Date:  Tuesday 21st April 2026

Where: Canterbury Christ Church University

A group of 30 Year 12 students recently visited Canterbury Christ Church University in the historic city of Canterbury, gaining valuable insight into higher education and future pathways beyond school.

The visit offered students a hands-on introduction to university-style learning through a series of engaging workshops. These sessions encouraged independent thinking, collaboration, and active participation—key skills essential for success in higher education.

As part of the trip, students were given a guided tour of the university’s facilities. They explored a range of learning environments, social spaces, and specialist resources, providing a realistic perspective on day-to-day student life.

Experiencing a university environment first-hand is particularly valuable for students at this stage in their education. Being outside the familiar school setting allows them to build confidence, develop independence, and engage with new expectations and ways of learning. It also helps to broaden their aspirations, making future goals feel more tangible and achievable while encouraging them to consider opportunities they may not have previously explored.

A key highlight of the visit was the opportunity for students to ask questions about all aspects of university life. Discussions covered important topics such as student finance, including loans and budgeting, as well as the differences between part-time and full-time study options. Students also learned more about accommodation, social opportunities, and the diverse experiences available at university.

Staff accompanying the trip were particularly impressed with how our students conducted themselves throughout the day. They demonstrated maturity, enthusiasm, and a genuine interest in learning, engaging positively with university staff and participating fully in all activities. Their behaviour and attitude were a credit to the school, reflecting our values and high expectations, and they represented the school community with pride.

Overall, the visit proved both inspiring and informative, helping students feel more confident and better prepared as they begin considering their next steps after sixth form.
