Year 12 Biologists Begin Exciting Outreach Programme with the University of Kent

Date: 9th January 2026

Where: University of Kent

Year 12 IB biology students have made an enthusiastic start to a new outreach programme in partnership with the University of Kent, designed to give them hands-on experience of real-world biological science. Today marked the first of three sessions that will take place across the year, offering students a valuable insight into university-level research and laboratory techniques.

During this initial visit, students explored the science behind lateral flow tests used to detect COVID-19. They investigated how these tests are developed and manufactured, gaining a deeper understanding of the biological principles that underpin a technology many people used regularly during the pandemic.

As part of the practical element of the session, students learned how to clean and purify proteins and how to make gel plates—key laboratory skills used in biomedical research. These activities allowed students to apply their classroom knowledge in a professional laboratory setting, helping to bridge the gap between school science and university research.

The session proved both engaging and informative, and students came away inspired by the experience. Many are already looking forward to the next visit, where they will continue to build on the skills and knowledge introduced today.

This outreach programme offers an excellent opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of biology, explore potential future careers in science, and experience life in a university laboratory environment.
