"If you could say it in words, there would be no reason to paint" - Edward Hopper
Vision Statement
The art Department at Royal Harbour Academy teaches students to understand the diversity and depth within visual arts and to be able to confidently apply a range of transferable skills in a meaningful way. We are working towards becoming an Arts Mark school.
Curriculum Overview
In year 7 and 8 students access art and design via a carousel with other practical and creative subjects. They study art for a term before moving onto the next subject area. In Year 7 we start by introducing the students to the formal elements of art through a range of materials and we study artists from different times and cultures. These skills are further developed in year 8. Year 9 students have an art lesson every week throughout the year so students have time to discover their area of expertise in art and for the last two years year 9 students have been working towards the Silver Arts Award, which is a level 2 qualification.
Cultural Capital
We are regularly involved in community projects, specifically with project Motorhouse, and the Thanet young artists festival in association with Thanet Rotary Club. We work closely with the university for Creative Arts to encourage student aspiration to attend university through attendance of school based workshops and invitation to holiday workshops and summer schools. We organise visits to Turner Contemporary gallery in Margate and have practising photographers working with our GCSE groups. This gives students an insight into the world of commercial arts based practice.
