Our Subjects

Art

The art Department at Royal Harbour Academy teaches students to understand the diversity and depth within visual arts and to be able to confidently apply a range of transferable skills in a meaningful way. We are working towards becoming an Arts Mark school.

Key Stage 3

Computing

At the Royal Harbour Academy, we believe that our students should have the opportunity to follow an IT and computing curriculum that prepares them for life in a modern world and take advantage of the ever-increasing demand for IT Professionals.
Having strong IT skills enables students to engage with the modern workplace, while Computer Science skills enables students to take an active part in the design, development and creation of new technologies to be used beyond being a consumer of technology.
We provide a broad range of skills and experiences at KS3, which are then further developed as students enter KS4 and then extended to KS5.
Students have the opportunity to Study Digital information Technologies, which allows students to acquire technical knowledge and technical skills through vocational contexts by studying the knowledge, understanding and skills, related to data management, data interpretation, data presentation and data protection as part of their Key Stage 4 learning.
Students can choose to Study Computer Science at GCSE where they will go on to develop key problem solving skills useful in a range of disciplines as well as the coding and software development skills that will give them an opportunity to work or for further study in the developing area seen to be key in the modern world.

We provide a broad range of skills and experiences at KS3, which are then further developed as students enter KS4 and then extended to KS5.

The English curriculum at RHA aims to develop students’ abilities in the key areas of communication: reading, writing and oracy. Through the study of rich, diverse texts our students also experience opportunities to consider and understand different perspectives and the world in which they live.

Ethics & Philosophy

The Philosophy and Ethics curriculum at RHA aims to encourage our students to think about the connections between religion and the issues people face in life, including animal life, environmental issues, prejudice, the right to life and war and peace.
Whilst also helping them to develop their knowledge and understanding of religion by exploring the impact of religious beliefs and values on moral behaviour.
Equally, we aim to provide the opportunity for our students to be able to be reflective of their own beliefs religious or otherwise and to recognise the things we share across culture, religious, ethnic and socio-economic communities. Fostering tolerance and respect towards all.

Geography

At RHA, the geography department aims to develop skills in literacy, numeracy and oracy through the study of both human and physical geography. This is done through learning about world in which we live along with an understanding of different cultures and beliefs. The use of texts, documentaries, images and fieldwork all contribute to a rounded curriculum that allows students to strive.

The History department's aim is to try and ensure that pupils leave RHA as young people who are confident in engaging with the wider world and who feel able to challenge ideas and views put forward to them. We endeavour to make them life long learners who can make informed decisions based upon their knowledge of the past. We pride ourselves on being a department that strives to be our best and as a result our curriculums will develop along with new historical research.

Mathematics

The maths department's vision is to motivate, inspire and guide pupils to build and discover mathematical knowledge. In doing so, embedding that knowledge in order to ensure it may be applied fluently to all aspects of learning for life. We strive to encourage pupils to become independent and ambitious towards their learning and employment.
We work hard to ensure that the maths taught offers a differentiated scheme of work ensuring that there is sufficient depth for all levels and abilities. By generating interest in the application of the skills, we generate interest in maths as a subject itself. It is crucial that maths is enjoyable and not taught through gimmicks but taught by helping our pupils find enjoyment in their own success and learning.By combining little wins and long term goals to drive pupils to strive to succeed. Helping pupils to understand the grades needed to get on to the IB course and A-Level maths courses at other Sixth Forms.
As a maths department we are passionate about maths and we ensure we teach our pupils to be resilient learners who can become life-long mathematicians with the aim that they can thrive in their GCSE and open many doors to a very bright future.
We have an ethos that no answer is a silly answer and if an answer is wrong we explore together to find the right answer together.
We believe every pupil can succeed in Maths.

Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) enables our students to become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.

Being active is so important and has such a positive impact on general well being. Our aim is to positively engage all students through a varied range of different activities. Skills based, progressive learning will give students the fundamentals needed to improve across all activities and understand their role in different sports. Enjoyment is the key, and that is a huge focus for us as a department.

At RHA, we firmly believe that Science plays a key part developing curiosity towards and understanding of the world around us. As such we aim to foster, in every pupil a sense of curiosity, wonder and awe in the world around us.

Spanish

At RHA, the Spanish curriculum provides an opportunity for students to broaden their knowledge of different cultures and learn how to express their ideas and thoughts in another language on a variety of topics. Learning a foreign language nurtures curiosity, encourages students to step beyond familiar cultural boundaries and develops new ways of thinking and seeing the world. Our ultimate goal is for students to understand and communicate personal and factual information in Spanish that goes beyond their immediate needs and interests, to develop their ability to be self-efficacious and to create the best conditions for success in the future.

Learning to look carefully and express yourself visually as well as through writing and analysis. Learning about artists and art movements from different times and cultures to enrich students knowledge and understanding of the world

GCSE Child Care

Childcare at KS4 teaches students the skills and knowledge they need to go on to have a successful career in the childcare industry. They will gain knowledge about working in childcare as well as the expected patterns of child development from a holistic viewpoint. This course leads nicely into Health & Social care at RHA sixth form, as well as into a range of potential college courses and apprenticeships.

Within construction, pupils will look at ways to keep themselves and others safe when working in a workshop environment. They will learn about regulation, tools, materials, and their properties. This will help pupils to gain a wide understanding of the industry and how it works. Pupils will gain knowledge of how to keep a construction site safe and what is expected from them once they step foot onto a site. Pupils will learn how to be selective when working with materials and understand how to measure and cost up a project.
