IB Japanese

Part of the IB Core

Vision Statement

Curriculum Details

Language development develops students in the areas of oral, visual and written linguistic and communicative abilities through a focus on receptive, productive and interactive skills. This component ensures that all IBCP students are exposed to an additional language that will increase their understanding of the wider world.

On the Japanese Language and Culture course, students learn Japanese language and experience its various cultural aspects. Some of the topics covered include food, table manners, origami, shopping, recognising public signs and procedures in emergency, such as earthquake and tsunami. We also have Japanese visitors attend our classes and they have introduced topics such as Japanese high school life, the Hiroshima atomic bomb and Kimono. Students also have an opportunity to visit a Japanese restaurant to taste Japanese food and practice their language there. Students are also required to research their chosen topic linked to Japanese culture and give presentations to the class. The course aims to widen students perspectives and assist their understanding towards different cultures.

How will it be delivered?
Students produce a portfolio of work throughout their course which is internally assessed by their Japanese speaking teacher at the end of the course. Students are expected to devote a minimum of 50 hours to this course.

Entry requirements
5 GCSE at 9 - 4 (or equivalent) with a minimum of 4 in English and or Maths
(Students that narrowly miss out on L3 entry requirements can still be accepted subject to decision of subject leader for the chosen course).

Your next steps...
