Date: Friday 10th October
Where: Westcliff Beach and Margate
On Friday 10th October, a group of Year 11 students from The Royal Harbour Academy undertook their GCSE fieldwork in the local area. The students spent their morning at the beach in Westcliff, Ramsgate, where they were able to look for evidence of Longshore Drift. The students completed beach profiles, calculated wave speed and wave angles. The students were exemplary and all concluded that they could see evidence of the process at the coastline. The trip has provided opportunities for students to study landscapes in greater depth, as well as improving their understanding of the local environment. All students have gained experience in using fieldwork equipment, working as a team and using practical skills, all of which are an integral part of their GCSE in geography.
In the afternoon, the students made their way over to Margate where they investigated the impact of regeneration on the environment and community of the town. The school is incredibly proud of how well the students represented The Royal Harbour Academy. Our students visited seven sites across the town, from the Harbour Arm and Turner Contemporary, through the High Street and to Dreamland. They were able to conduct pedestrian counts, ask the public questions (through questionnaires) and carry out environmental quality surveys. It was admirable to see our students interacting with the public so politely and with great manners. They are a true testament to the school.
The students have gained an excellent opportunity to look at regeneration in our local area, and to draw conclusions about the impact of the multi-faceted scheme which aims to address long-standing deprivation and to revitalise the town’s economy and public spaces.
Overall, our geographers thoroughly enjoyed their field trip and should be proud of their
achievements throughout the day. The geography department at RHA would like to thank them for all their hard work, and wish them every success in implementing these key skills in their upcoming GCSE exams.
