Y7 & Y8 Students Take Flight with RAF Drone Coding Workshop

On 9th May, students in Years 7 and 8 had the exciting opportunity to take part in a hands-on Drone Coding Workshop led by Pete Barclay, Head of Artificial Intelligence at the Royal Air Force STEM Education programme, delivered through Hyett Education.

The workshop aimed to:

Encourage understanding of coding by introducing students to real programming tools such as block coding and Swift (the same language used to develop apps for iPhones and iPads), help students understand how to use technology safely, including drones, through structured and responsible activities, and apply STEM concepts in a real-life context, combining science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in an engaging and practical way.

Students created algorithms to control drone take-off, landing, and navigation. They successfully programmed drones to fly at different heights and distances, guiding them safely around courses and performing coordinated routines.

Dr Green, our science teacher, commented, “They loved it!” The excitement continued beyond the classroom, with students enthusiastically sharing their experiences in the playground and asking whether the school could purchase drones for future lessons.

This workshop not only sparked enthusiasm for STEM subjects but also equipped students with valuable, real-world digital skills.

Pete Barclay was full of praise for the school, saying he was “hugely impressed by the students’  engagement and behaviour. The children were excellent in their approach to work and showed great understanding around STEM related terminology”

A huge thank you to Pete Barclay and the team at Hyett Education for delivering such an inspiring and memorable workshop.
