On 26th September 2025 just over 100 Year 11 students enjoyed an exciting and educational trip to Thorpe Park, where science was brought vividly to life outside the classroom.
The visit offered a unique opportunity for students to see physics and even a bit of biology in action. As part of their studies, students explored key scientific principles using the park’s thrilling rides and attractions.
Students calculated the acceleration of Stealth, examined gravitational potential energy on Hyperia, and discussed momentum on the bumper cars. The learning didn’t stop there - some students even delved into biology, considering the effect of adrenaline on the body during high-speed rides.
Throughout the day, the students behaved in a mature and sensible manner, representing the school with pride and earning praise from staff. Their enthusiasm and conduct made the trip not only enjoyable but a true credit to our school.
Taking science out of the classroom helps students connect what they learn in theory to the real world around them. When students can see, touch, and experience scientific principles in action like calculating acceleration on a rollercoaster or feeling the effects of adrenaline on a thrill ride, it deepens their understanding and makes learning memorable.
These experiences also help to ignite curiosity and motivate students. Real-world learning shows that science isn’t just about equations and textbooks it’s about understanding how the world works. Trips like the one to Thorpe Park encourage students to think critically, ask questions, and see science as something exciting and relevant to everyday life.
Engaging students in this way helps build confidence, teamwork, and a lifelong interest in STEM subjects—skills and attitudes that extend far beyond the classroom.
The day was a great success, and students returned inspired and enthusiastic to continue their studies in physics and beyond.
