A select group of Y7 students from The Royal Harbour Academy have taken part in the empowering Change Makers initiative hosted by Canterbury Christ Church University. Change makers is a project designed to enhance literacy, raise aspirations, and motivate young people by encouraging creativity, self-expression, and an understanding of the purpose of higher education.
Throughout the programme, students have engaged in a series of dynamic workshops, where they developed both academic and personal skills. These sessions have allowed them to explore and express their beliefs, build confidence, and collaborate on the creation of powerful literary pieces such as posters, slogans, and advertisements. The culmination of the project is a celebration event where their work is proudly showcased to family, friends, and supporters.
One of the most moving highlights was students delivering passionate speeches on the changes they want to see in the world. Topics included racism, homophobia, and climate change, showcasing their awareness, compassion, and courage. Encouraging students to think about societal issues whether it's racism, climate change, poverty, or inequality, helps them understand the world beyond their immediate environment. It teaches them to question, to investigate causes, and to think about possible solutions. This nurtures informed, thoughtful, and compassionate individuals.
Allowing children to express what matters to them sends a powerful message: your voice matters. This helps to boost their confidence and sense of purpose. It shifts their mindset from “I’m too young” to “I can make a difference,” which can be incredibly empowering.
Assistant Headteacher, Mr Wall, shared his reflections on the event:
“I have been fortunate enough to attend the Canterbury Christ Church University Change Makers celebration, where our students gave powerful speeches about changes they want to see in the world. Over 150 people watched as our students spoke confidently and passionately. I was bursting with pride the entire time. True change comes from those who see the world differently, and we have that in abundance.”
Mrs Pope, Year 7 teacher and the staff member who led the students through the project, added:
“Watching our students grow through this experience has been truly special. From the very beginning, they embraced the challenges, spoke up about what they believe in, and supported one another every step of the way. I am incredibly proud of their creativity, courage, and commitment. Seeing them deliver their speeches with such confidence in front of a large audience was a moment I’ll never forget. This experience has not only improved their literacy but also shaped their character and belief in their ability to make a difference.”
A thank you goes to Canterbury Christ Church University for inviting us to be part of such an important and inspiring project. Your warmth, support, and dedication has made a lasting impact on our students, and we are truly grateful for the opportunity to work alongside you.
