The Royal Harbour

Academy

Intent

Our desire is for all students at RHA to enjoy a progressive and equitable curriculum that challenges, inspires and excites them about the world in which we live . Through studying a wide range of diverse and global literature, students will explore perspectives, cultures, histories and societies, thus allowing them to develop as open-minded, reflective and knowledgeable individuals.
With a strong focus on literacy, students will confidently hone their communication skills in areas of reading, writing and oracy. With multiple opportunities to use language in creative and academic ways, students will be enabled to lead fulfilling, confident and knowledgeable lives in their future.

WHY?

At the Royal Harbour Academy, we know that our students must be literate to be able to succeed in the world beyond school. Our students deserve the opportunity to confidently use language in ways that will benefit them in the future. They deserve to have access to a wide range of literature which can help them make sense about the world in which we live, thus encouraging empathy and understanding towards others in our community.

HOW
Our English curriculum has been created by subject specialists to be challenging, enjoyable and enriching. At KS3 we deliver a range of novels, drama and poetry which align thematically with the themes and concepts taught in KS4. Literacy is a key aspect of our subject; there are continued opportunities to improve on writing, reading and spoken language. Weekly guided reading lessons continue to embed the key reading skills required of our students to be fluent and confident readers: inference, skimming, scanning, comprehension, fluency and prediction. We use writing strategies- Talk for Writing- at KS3 to encourage our students to be successful and independent writers through a series of ‘cold writes’, shared writing experiences and independent responses.
