Intent
What? (Subject Intent):
The Geography Department at The Royal Harbour Academy aims to provide an enriching curriculum that allows every young person the opportunity to reach their full potential, while providing them with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the wider world as happy, inspired and resilient learners. We intend to grow a greater understanding in our student body of the geographical area in which we live, and the wider world, ensuring they understand that all aspects of geography are interconnected and impact lives in both the local and global community. We wish to enable our students to develop experiences, challenge misconceptions, to understand their part in a changing world and to understand how the physical world around us is not only created, but how it links to the human environment and vice versa. We hope our students become inspired to change the world and lead brilliant lives.
How? (Subject Implementation):
Subject expertise is vital in the implementation of our Geography Curriculum. Our teachers use a combination of subject knowledge and real-world experiences to engage, challenge and enthuse our students about the world in which they live. We encourage students to be critical thinkers and to challenge misconceptions, enabling them to secure a solid foundation on which to build their geographic knowledge. Our curriculum is highly relevant and creative and focuses on the interactions between physical and human environments and the understanding of key physical processes at a range of scales. Students will use the knowledge and skills taught in each lesson as a building block needed for later learning.
Why? (Subject Impact):
Throughout their learning journey, students will become increasingly confident in making balanced judgements about issues on a range of scales. Students will become more aware of the impact that global issues have on their lives, and the lives of people around the globe, with a focus on differing views and opinions.
Summative progression will be shown through regular assessments from Year 7 to Year 11, and of course the final examination grade at the end of Year 11. Formative progression will be shown from the development of a lifelong interest and curiosity in the subject.
The world belongs to me because I understand it
